Stroke Training and Awareness Resources (STARs)

What to look out for

  • Unable, unwilling to use toilet
  • Small leak of urine/faeces (look out for damp/soiled underwear)
  • Uncontrollable urgent desire to pass urine/faeces
  • Hesistancy, poor stream, dribbling, frequency, feeling of incomplete bladder empty
  • No awareness of need to empty bladder/bowel
  • Unknowingly passing urine/faeces when asleep
  • Refusal to eat/drink

All of these should be reported and fully investigated. In some instances these effects can also be due to other underlying medical conditions such as urinary infections or prostatic disease.
