Q. What would be your 3 priorities from this list?

  • Physical Exam, palpate abdomen/bladder – to help identify signs of incomplete bladder emptying and faecal loading.
  • Bladder Scan – this is a non-invasive way of estimating residual volume of urine.
  • PR exam – a loaded bowel may contribute to incomplete bladder emptying. Royal College of Nursing. (2019). Bowel Care. Management of Lower Bowel Dysfunction, including Digital Rectal Examination and Digital Removal of Faeces. London: RCN Nursing Practice Guidance. https://www.rcn.org.uk/professional-development/publications/pub-007522

Not initial priority:

  • Take obs – raised temperature may indicate infection.
  • MSU – in relation to identifying possible UTI look out for leucocytes, nitrates, protein and blood.
  • In/Out catheter – only if incomplete emptying suspected and if no bladder scanner available.
  • Fluid Balance Chart – to assess input and output.
