HEARTe and OHCA
HEARTe has been designed primarily for use by registered health professionals across primary and acute services who are involved in general areas which include cardiac care, however wider health and social partnership agencies and staff may also benefit from using it.
The OHCA specific module is a resource for those trained to respond to an Out of Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA). Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland (CHSS) launched this resource on September 30th 2017.

HEARTe aims
The aim of the HEARTe project is to be a free heart disease educational resource that health and social care professionals across Scotland can access.
CHSS collaborated with key stakeholders and partners and developed an educational framework which aligned to cardiac specific areas. These areas were identified as priorities by the National Advisory Committee for Heart Disease (NACHD) and related actions as outlined as priorities by the Better Heart Disease and Stroke care Action Plan.
The educational framework underpins the cardiac specific content and has driven the learning outcomes for each module.
HEARTe can be used to enhance your Continuing Professional Development (CPD) or to enhance your overall cardiac knowledge.
HEARTe target audience
This e-learning resource is aimed at health and social care staff who may:
- be new to cardiac/heart disease – such as rotational staff or those new in post
- wish to refresh / extend their existing cardiac knowledge and skills
- be community based with a mixed pathology case load including cardiac patients
- have limited access to other cardiac specific training
The website may also be accessed by patients, carers and other members of the general public.
OHCA aims
Increase awareness of the potential physical, psychological and social consequences of OHCA on those involved, in whatever capacity.
Facilitate those responding to an OHCA to recognise the aftercare and rehabilitation needs of those affected by the event,
Enable those responding to OHCA to support individuals, within their scope of responsibility, and to sign-post individuals to other, more specialised services, where appropriate.
Provide a one-stop directory of resources and organisations available to support those on whom OHCA has impacted.
OHCA target audience
An OHCA impacts on many people – not only the person who has had the cardiac arrest and family members, but also those individuals who respond to an OHCA.
This resource aims to provide support and guidance for those attending an OHCA in a trained capacity.
