Cause of continence Definition
Urgency urinary incontinence Disruption to the bladder control centres in the brain – leads to an overactive or hyper-reflexive bladder
Functional urinary incontinence Stroke related mobility, perceptual, cognitive or language deficits – difficulties for the person perceiving or communicating their need to use the toilet and their ability to reach the facilities.
Incomplete emptying / Underactive bladder/ Overflow incontinence Neuropathy or outflow obstruction that results in an underactive or hypotonic bladder – prolonged bladder emptying and urinary retention.
Overflow faecal incontinence Prolonged immobility and reduced activity could lead to a loaded bowel, constipation, incomplete emptying and faecal impaction. Liquid faeces can leak from the rectum around the hard stool.
