Anybody having had a stroke is not legally allowed to consider driving until one month post stroke
The team of health professionals and doctor will advise Flora if she can resume driving one month following her stroke
At present, due to her cognitive and perceptual difficulties, it appears unlikely that Flora will be able to drive for some time
Flora can be reviewed at a later date regarding returning to driving
If her doctor decides that Flora is not medically fit to drive one month post stroke Flora should inform DVLA
False statements
Flora can resume driving after 3 months if somebody is in the car with her
Her family can decide when Flora is ready to return to driving
Additional Information
The DVLA Assessing fitness to drive a guide for medical professionals states that:
DVLA does not need to be notifiedunless there is residual neurologicaldeficit 1 month after the episode and, in particular:
visual field defects
cognitive defects
impaired limb function
Minor limb weakness alone after astroke will not require notification toDVLA unless restriction to certaintypes of vehicle or adapted controlsmay be needed. With adaptations, severe physical impairment may not bean obstacle to driving. (Chapter 2: Neurological disorders- Stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA) and cerebral venous thrombosis – including amaurosis fugax and retinal artery occlusion pg 29.)
Seizures occurring at the time of astroke or TIA, or in the ensuing firstweek, may be treated as provoked for licensing purposes, provided thereis no previous history of unprovokedseizure or cerebral pathology.Such provoked seizures will usuallynecessitate driving cessation.
