During atrial fibrillation, clots form in the heart and the can be carried through the circulation towards the brain causing ischaemic stroke. A blood vessel in the brain can then be blocked by this blood clot, resulting in an area of brain damage beyond the site where the clot gets jammed in the blood vessel.
