The absolute risks are higher than average for stroke or TIA patients who have:
- prior history of heart attacks, TIAs, previous strokes and peripheral vascular disease
- diabetes
- atrial fibrillation
- carotid artery stenosis
Risks are generally lower
- if no cause of stroke or TIA is identified
