Background

  • Stroke is the 4th largest cause of death in Scotland (National records of Scotland mortality information 2018)
  • Stroke is the single most common cause of adult disability (Stroke Association State of the Nation Stroke Statistics 2018)
  • There are around 9,100 new strokes a year (13,300 strokes and TIAs) (Scottish Stroke Statistics 2018)
  • Around 1 in 4 stroke survivors will experience another stroke within five years (Stroke Association State of the Nation Stroke Statistics 2018)
