  1. A stroke is not most commonly caused by a burst blood vessel (haemorrhage) in the brain. Only approx 15% of strokes are caused by haemorrhages. The most common cause of stroke is a blockage in the blood vessels in the brain (ischaemic) which happens in approx 85% of cases.
  2. The brain scan of a person who has had a stroke is not always abnormal. Sometimes abnormalities do not show up on a brain scan, particularly if it is within a couple of hours of an ischaemic stroke occurring.
  3. High blood pressure is the main risk factor for stroke.
