Mr Jones has difficulty speaking, drags his right leg, and has weakness in his right arm which has lasted for 2 days. The following are likely to be true –

• The left side of his brain is most likely to be affected. If his right leg and arm have been affected, the stroke has occurred in the left side of his brain.
• You can’t assume he has suffered a TIA and that his problems will resolve. TIAs last for less than 24 hours, Mr Jones has had his symptoms for 2 days now.
• From his symptoms you cannot confidently say he has had an ischaemic stroke. It is not possible to tell for certain whether someone has had an ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke without a brain scan.
