Things that influence recovery

Indicators for a more favourable recovery after the initial few weeks following a stroke include:

  • Continence
  • Young age
  • Mildness of the stroke
  • Rapid improvement
  • Lack of perceptual and cognitive problems

Indicators for a less favourable recovery following a stroke include:

  • Pre-stroke comorbidities and functional impairment
  • Urinary/faecal incontinence
  • Poor swallowing ability (Dysphagia)
  • Difficulty with language or speech (Aphasia)
  • Cognitive problems
