Mechanical contraction of the heart

Immediately following the initiation of the electrical activity in the heart, myocardial contraction occurs. This generates the pumping action of the heart.

Question 1: Stroke Volume is:

  1. the amount of blood pumped out of the ventricle in each beat (correct)
  2. systole and diastole cycle
  3. cardiac output x heart rate

Question 2: Cardiac Output is:

  1. heart rate x blood pressure
  2. stroke volume x heart rate (correct)
  3. blood pressure x pulse pressure

Question 3: Pre Load is:

  1. the pressure within the ventricle at end of diastole (correct)
  2. the pressure in the heart at rest
  3. blood flow from the heart to the body

Question 4: After load is:

  1. ventricles relaxing after contraction
  2. ventricles after polarisation
  3. resistance to ventricular contraction

Question 5: The ability of the heart muscle to pump effectively is called:

  1. Contractility
  2. Automaticity
