What has been happening with Ana since she went home

Ana has been home from hospital for a few weeks now. She was initially seen by the neurorehabilitation physiotherapist but this has finished now, as she is independently mobile with a stick, and she has been discharged from the early discharge support team. She has been feeling ‘different’ since being home but has not mentioned it to her family or rehabilitation staff, and is finding the usual family gatherings hard to tolerate. Ana arranges to see her doctor.

Doctor: “How can I help you today?”

Ana: “I’ve not been feeling right for a while and can’t put my finger on it. I’m finding the family gatherings really difficultI can’t keep up with the conversations and tend to hide away in the kitchen and I seem to be forgetting things a lot. “

Doctor: “Can you give me some examples of what you are forgetting?”

Ana: “The thing that’s upset me the most is when I forgot my granddaughter’s 16th birthday and I would never have forgotten something as important as this before.”

Doctor: “I think memory is often impacted after stroke and I think it is worth us getting this checked out more. We could do a memory screen here, but I think there would be great value if you were to see a neuropsychologist who specialises in these situations.”
