3. Cognitive factors

Continence may be affected by the following cognitive factors
Level of consciousness a person may be less alert following a stroke and therefore less aware of their need to go to the toilet
Confusion/disorientation a person may be unsure of where the toilet is or of the processes involved in going to the toilet
Perceptual problems a person may not recognise the toilet as a toilet (black hole & fear of toilet)
