Bladder and bowel issues are very common following stroke. They may cause individuals to refuse to drink or eat, affect their mood and may increase their risk of pressure sores and falls.

Skills

  • Awareness and understanding of the issues and ability to deal with them a sensitive manner while maintaining dignity and minimising distress.
  • Ability to support recovery of bladder and bowel function
  • Ability to recognise need for and implement ongoing bladder and bowel management strategies.

Benefits to the individual

Physical and emotional impact of bladder and bowel issues are recognised and effective rehabilitation or management strategies are implemented to support recovery of bladder & bowel function.
