Stroke Training and Awareness Resources (STARs)

What to look out for

  • Unable or difficulty in using the toilet
  • Restlessness/agitation as an indicator of need to pass urine or faeces
  • Small leaks of urine/faeces (look out for damp/smearing/soiled underwear)
  • Uncontrollable urgent need to pass urine/faeces
  • Hesistancy, poor stream, dribbling, frequency, feeling of incomplete bladder empty
  • Need to use the toilet at night
  • No awareness of need to empty the bladder/bowel and unknowingly passing urine/faeces
  • Unknowingly passing urine/faeces
  • Difficulties passing urine; indicating possible retention

All of these should be reported and fully investigated. In some instances these effects can also be due to other underlying medical conditions such as urinary infections or prostatic disease.
