A summary of the risk factors for stroke

The risk factors for stroke we’ve already discussed can be divided into lifestyle factors and medical conditions. Below is a summary of this information.

Lifestyle Factors
Poor diet – high in salt, saturated fat and cholesterol These factors are all modifiable and people should be given advice and support to help them achieve these changes.
Lack of exercise
Smoking
Obesity
Excess alcohol
Recreational drug use

 

Medical Conditions
High blood pressure (hypertension) The lifestyle factors listed above may contribute to these medical conditions. Medical issues should be recognised early and treated to minimise the risk of stroke or stroke complications.  It may be necessary to treat these conditions with medications.
High cholesterol
Diabetes
Atrial fibrillation
