Q. Based on the scan above, what does this result indicate?

Edith is experiencing retention – this is incorrect. At least 100mls+ of urine is considered retention.

Edith is unsuccessfully emptying her bladder – this is incorrect.

Edith is effectively emptying her bladder – this is correct. The scan results show that Edith is effectively emptying her bladder. If a bladder scanner is not available or if staff are not trained in using a scanner, an accurate input / output chart would also provide this information. You could also insert an in/out catheter for an accurate measure of residual urine.

Edith has urgency – although this is correct, you can’t tell from the scan.
