Case Study: Granny Edna

Granny Edna on the dance floor with her walking stick

Edna is enjoying a bit of a dance as well. What advice would you give Edna to reduce her risk of further stroke?

Granny EdnaEdna’s story

Hello. Nice to meet you. My name is Edna and I had a stroke 3 years ago when I was 78. I have used a walking stick since then but it doesn’t stop me going to my exercise class at the sheltered housing. I enjoyed the pudding today, but I don’t usually bother, because my doctor advised me to loose some weight as I am diabetic and i take medication  for high blood pressure. Do you like my hair? I had it done specially for today; I’ve let it go but before I had the stroke I used to colour it.

1) As Edna has had a previous stroke, she should realise it’s especially important that she takes her medication to keep her high blood pressure under control.
2) She has also lost weight to normal levels since her stroke and is now an average weight.
3) She should continue to eat a balanced diet to help control her diabetes and high blood pressure.
4) She should continue attending her sheltered housing exercise group every week.
